FAQ Section
A: Yes Support is recommended for any counter top that has a hangover of more than 8"; this includes all types of counter tops for example natural stone, concrete, wood and other materials.
Q: How far apart should corbels be spaced?
A: About 40 inches apart How many corbels you need will depend on the width of your counter or shelf. It is recommended that you use a support bracket every 40"; However, two brackets will suffice for counter tops up to 48" wide. The need for bracket support every 40" increases with the depth of the hangover.
Q: How should I determine the depth required for support?
A: It is better that you don't leave more than four inches of hangover on a counter-top. From an aesthetic point of view, a corbel depth within an inch or two of the counter's end is ideal. This means if your counter has a 12" hangover, the corbel should be anywhere between 7.5"-10" deep. (The 10" inch deep corbel will obviously look much better)
Q: How should I keep my legs/knees from hitting the brackets while sitting on a bar stool? Will
A:Technically, there shouldn't be any such issue as long as your bar stool is pulled out when you sit. Sometimes bar stools that allow rotation can cause such trouble, but this usually depends on the depth of the hangover as well as the space available for your bar stools between the corbels.
Q: Is it possible to install corbels as a Do-It-Yourself project? What are the requirements in this case?
A: Yes Please refer to our corbel installation guide for this.

Q: Are the corbels available in other custom finishes?A: Most of our corbels do have the option to be purchase with no finish, allowing you to apply your own custom finish. If a bracket is not available unfinished you can paint over the finish with your own
Q: How do I apply a finish to raw brackets?
A: First decide what type of finish you want. Once you decide on a finish you will want to clean the corbels with a cleaner that removes oils, dirt and dust. After the pieces are cleaned thoroughly apply the finish you picked out using the instructions provided on the paint you have. Since there are several finish options you may want to consult with a professional if you have questions. We always recommend powder coating when possible or using a high quality rust preventative paint.
Q: I'm planning on using a 6'x16" granite slab for my entry table. How many corbels will I need? How do I support these properly?
A: First of all congrats on the entryway upgrade! Granite entry tables with these dimensions are commonly used in homes and businesses. For support is is very important that you mount the corbels to a wall stud for maximum support, your wall studs can usually be found at 16" intervals. If you don't run into a stud where you need to mount a corbel, use large toggle bolts and opt for at least three corbels to ensure proper support. If you find studs, even two corbels can do the job. It is highly recommended that you use an under mount angle plate to support the entry table, whether you find studs or not. Kindly refer to our "Installation Guide" for further details.
Q: Can I install corbels for outdoor use? How will the corbels weather in this situation?
A: Yes, but over time the finish can break down and will eventually need to be touched up. We also recommend using stainless steel hardware (screws, bolts, etc..) this will insure that over the years that hardware wont rust out and fail. To extend the life of an iron finish that is exposed to the elements you can protect it with a clear coat or wax products.
Q: Why should I choose Wrought Iron Corbels over wood? What are the benefits?
A: Wrought Iron is stronger and sturdier than wood, because it is stronger less material is needed giving you more room under the counter, bar, shelf or cabinets. Iron corbels are also suitable for outdoor as well as indoor applications, and you can get more ornate and elaborate designs with wrought iron. Ultimately your decision comes down to preference, some people simply prefer the look of wood over iron.
Q: Is it possible to replace wood corbels with cast iron or wrought iron corbels?
A: Yes absolutely. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you'll need to match the corbel width so that it fits in properly. This way you won't have to refinish the patch where the old corbel was placed. On the other hand, if your corbel is to be installed on a painted surface, there should be no issues at all with matching widths.

Q: How much weight will a wrought iron corbel hold?
A: Typically around 150lbs each when properly mounted. When using these corbels to support mantles, countertop overhangs, bars, shelving or anything in your home where you need a support bracket you should know that its not the bracket you need to worry about, its the way you mounted it that could affect is load bearing capacity. Our corbels and brackets are made of steel and have a quarter inch back plate with decorative supporting designs in the center. These wrought Iron corbels are heavier and sturdier than the brackets available elsewhere in the market. When installing mantles, shelving, counter-tops, etc..., in your home, if you are using a wrought iron bracket/corbel, you won't have to worry about its strength. All you have to be concerned with is that they are properly installed. Once properly installed to a mounting surface, your corbel won't give you trouble - These corbels would rip out of the mounting surface before they fail.
